4/15/2019 Fire StartingHave you gotten yourself lost in the forbidden forest? Did you lose your wand? Well if you have steel wool and a battery, you can start an instant fire. You’ll need it if you don’t get help until the morning when the gamekeeper comes to check out the magical creatures. I tried to find a method to start fires that I haven’t tried yet. I heard of the steel wool and battery method before, but never tried it. I also found research for starting a fire with a water balloon and starting a fire with an aluminum can and a chocolate bar. I found a video to show me what to do. The video even told me what kind of steel wool and battery to use. The materials were fairly cheap. I needed to get fine steel wool and a 9-volt battery. I’m sure you can take a fresh steel wool pad from the kitchen, not all of the house elves can use their magic. Some Muggleborns, such as myself, keep batteries with them all the time and I’m sure they can let you keep some with you. You’re supposed to be able to touch both parts of the 9-volt battery to the steel wool and sparks with start. Once sparks starts you need to have tinder nearby to start the fire. So I tried to do if 4 times. The first trial I used a steel wool that was made for washing dishes, it had dry soap in it, I wrapped newspaper around the steel wool and it just gave me sparks. The second time, I tried keeping the battery against the wool, which again just gave sparks. The third time I wet the steel wool in hopes that, that would help conduct something. But it just made it all soapy and nothing happened. The last time I tried it, I used a plain steel wool, and came up with nothing again. Now this last time, I’ll own it up to either not being the fine steel wool I needed or the battery was just dead from using it too much. I think the first two attempts didn’t work well because on the day I did it, the wind was blowing really hard and it was hard to light anything. I think the next time I try this, because I haven’t given up yet, I am going to make sure to get the right steel wool and make sure it isn’t windy out.
But overall, I did have a lot of fun trying to start a fire, but I don't think this is exactly handy for survival because the chances the weather is perfect on the day you get lost are very slim. Heck, the chances you have these supplies with you on the day you get lost are slim. So you better just keep a tight hold on your wand and stay away from the Forbidden Forest. I mean, there is a reason it has that name. But if you do get lost, try to find the old Weasley flying Ford Anglia, I'm sure it's in there somewhere. Comments are closed.
